Historic Milestone for Karate with Celebration of First Karate One Youth League in Africa

TheWorld Karate Federationreached a historic milestone this past weekend with the successful staging of the first-everKarate One Youth Leagueevent in Africa, held inHarare, Zimbabwe.Organised by the World Karate Federation (WKF) in partnership with the Zimbabwe Karate Federation, the competition marked a major step in the global expansion of karate and celebrated the core values of the sport: respect, honour, and unity.

The Harare event will be remembered not only as the firstKarate One Youth Leaguetournament ever hosted in Africa but also for its strong continental participation. Athletes from10 African countriescompeted over three days, with some African karateka taking part in a major international karate event for the very first time. Their presence highlighted the growing interest in youth karate across the continent and the opportunities created by bringing global competitions closer to African athletes.

Sporting results reflected that growth. African competitors delivered outstanding performances, with50 athletes from the continent winning medalsacross the22 competition categories. Notably, the podiums inJunior Kumite Male -61 kg,Junior Kumite Male 76 kg, andU14 Kata Femalewere all made up entirely of African athletes, a clear sign of the strength and potential of youth karate on the continent.

The event has clearly reflected the WKF’s strategic commitment to growing karate across Africa. In addition to supporting the event’s organisation and logistics, the WKF contributed technical expertise, provided tatamis to ensure international competition standards, and held a specialised seminar for judges to expand their knowledge and use of clicker systems, strengthening officiating standards for future competitions across the region.

Beyond the competition, the event also generated significant global attention. Over the three days of action, theWorld Karate Federation’ssocial media platforms received countless messages from fans, athletes, and stakeholders around the world celebrating the importance of hosting theKarate One Youth Leaguein Africa. Many highlighted the historic nature of the event, praised the performances of the young African competitors, and commended the initiative of the WKF to bring first-class sporting events to the continent.

The success of theKarate One Youth League Hararewas underlined byAntonio Espinós, President of theWorld Karate Federation.
