The World Karate Federation (WKF) proudly joins the global celebration of World Intellectual Disability Day, observed on 25 July, reaffirming its commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities through the continued development of Para Karate. The WKF highlights the power of inclusion through Para Karate and its partnership with Virtus

In this sense, theWKFstands alongsideVirtus, its longstanding partner in advancing sport for athletes with an intellectual impairment. Together, the two organisations continue to create opportunities for athletes to compete at the highest level while promoting participation, empowerment, and social inclusion through karate.

This year's theme,"This is Me – This is Us,"celebrates both individuality and belonging. It encourages people with an intellectual disability to tell their own stories in their own voice and to be recognised for their talents, achievements, and aspirations rather than being defined by stereotypes or misconceptions.

Few athletes embody that message more powerfully thanOlivia Kakosy,a three-time Para Karate World Champion in the K21 category and a member of the Virtus Athletes' Council. Through her remarkable sporting career and advocacy, Kakosy has become an inspiring ambassador for athletes with intellectual impairments around the world.

"I am a Para Karate athlete competing in the K21 category for athletes with intellectual impairments,"Kakosy said. "If I had to describe what this means to me in just one word, it would be opportunity."

"Karate has given me the opportunity to belong to a community, to make friends, and to share everything that is inside me with others. Through karate, I have found a place where I can truly be myself."

She also highlighted the profound personal impact the sport has had beyond competition.

"Karate has taken me on a lifelong journey of physical and personal development. The values and lessons I learn in training help me every day, giving me strength, confidence and support in my daily life."

"Thanks to karate, my concentration and self-confidence have improved tremendously. These qualities help me face everyday challenges and overcome the difficulties that come with my disability."

Looking ahead, Kakosy dreams of continuing to inspire future generations.

"One day, I would like to become a karate coach so that I can pass on everything I have learned to those who choose to learn from me. Until then, alongside my dream of winning more World Championship titles, I also dream of one day competing at the Olympic Games."

Above all, Kakosy embraces her identity with pride.

"I do not hide who I am, and I am not ashamed of it. I am open with people and I never try to conceal my disability. It is simply part of who I am."

As a member of the Virtus Athletes' Council, she also calls on the global community to join this important celebration.

"Today, as a member of the Virtus Athletes' Council, I do my very best to encourage fellow athletes, coaches, friends and supporters to join us in celebrating the International Day of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities on 25 July."

"Together, we can raise our voices and ensure they are heard. Together, we can show the world what our community stands for—our strength, our determination, our friendship and our belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential."

"Because this is more than a slogan. This is me. This is us."

The WKF remains firmly committed to building an inclusive future where every athlete has the opportunity to thrive. Through Para Karate and its close collaboration with Virtus, the Federation continues to champion diversity, break down barriers and ensure that karate remains a sport where everyone belongs.
